I've crocheted a lot of hats in the past two, three years, and have tried many different patterns. I prefer really colourful hats and granny square style ones are very suitable to obtain just that! In order to create the perfect pattern, I've combined various patterns I found online (Ravelry is a great source for that). Through trial and error I think I have created the perfect hat - I call this my 'Happy granny hat'!You can use any colour combination you like to make this hat yours. The photos show a multicolour hat and one in brown and cream. You can make your hat larger (or smaller) using a different yarn and hook. Another option is to add clusters (increase per 5) or to crochet less clusters.
The pattern for a 'Happy granny hat'
- Yarn - Any sports weight yarn. I've used cotton, but you can use acrylic, wool or a mixed yarn if you prefer.
- Hook - 3.5 (E) - go up or down depending on how tight you crochet or what size hat you want to obtain.
- Size - Using a similar yarn and hook, this pattern will help you make a hat that fits a 3-6 months old child (about 35-40 cm around)
- Stitches used (in US terms!)
- Slip stitch (sl st)
- Chain stitch (ch)
- Half double crochet (hdc)
- Double crochet (dc)
- Magic ring
I don't mention any colour changes in this pattern, that's up to you to decide. Start each round with ch 2, this doesn't count as your first stitch!
- Round 1: Start with a magic ring, ch 2, 9 hdc in magic ring. Join to first hdc with a slip stitch.
- Round 2: ch 2, 2 hdc in same stitch, 2 hdc in next. Crochet 2 hdc in each stitch around. Join to first hdc with a slip stitch. (18 hdc)
- Round 3: ch 2, 2 hdc in same stitch, hdc in next, ** 2 hdc, hdc in next - repeat from ** around. Join to first hdc with a slip stitch. (27 hdc)
- Round 4: ch 2, 2 hdc in same stitch, hdc in next 2, ** 2 hdc, hdc in next 2 - repeat from ** around. Join to first hdc with a slip stitch. (36 hdc)
- Round 5: ch 2, 2 hdc in same stitch, hdc in next 3, ** 2 hdc, hdc in next 3 - repeat from ** around. Join to first hdc with a slip stitch. (45 hdc)\
- Round 6: ch 3, 2 dc in same stitch, ch 1 (this is your first cluster), skip two stitches, 3 dc, ch 1 ** sk 2 st, 3 dc, ch 1 - repeat from ** around. Join to first dc with a slip stitch. (15 clusters + ch 1)
- Round 7: sl st in each stitch until you reach the first ch 1 space of previous round, ch 3, 2 dc, ch 1, 3 dc, ch 1 (double cluster) ** 3 dc in next ch 1 sp, ch 1, 3 dc in next ch 1 sp, ch 1, (3 dc in next ch 1 space, ch 1) twice. repeat from ** around. Join to first dc with a slip stitch (20 clusters + ch 1)
- Round 8-11: sl st in each stitch until you reach the first ch 1 space of previous round, ch 3, 2 dc, ch 1 (first cluster) ** 3 dc in next ch 1 sp, ch 1 - repeat from ** around. Join to first dc with a slip stitch. (20 clusters + ch 1)
- Round 12-15: sl st in each stitch until you reach the first ch 1 space of previous round, ch 3, 2 dc, (first cluster) ** 3 dc in next ch 1 sp - repeat from ** around. Join to first dc with a slip stitch. (20 clusters)
- Round 16: ch 2 (doesn't count as first hdc!), hdc in same stitch ** hdc in next - repeat from ** around. Join with a slip stitch to first hdc. (60 hdc)
- Round 17: ch 2 (doesn't count as first hdc), hdc in same stitch ** hdc in next - repeat from ** around. Join with a slip stitch to first hdc or use the needle join technique to finish this round. (60 hdc)
Done! You've made your own 'Happy granny hat'! You are allowed to sell hats you made using this pattern. You can also post this pattern to your blog, but please link back to mine.
